A long weekend means long sunny days and lots of food on the bbq. I don’t know about you, but I love sticky sweet chicken or ribs that sticks to your fingers and falls off the bone. Pair that with a spring minted spritzer and I’m in my happy place.
My favourite go to bbq sauce, the one my kids and neighbours love, has only 5 ingredients. But why would you want to make your own bbq sauce in the first place? Go grab your favourite bbq sauce lurking in your fridge. Take a quick look at the label, and I’m sure you’ll see glucose-fructose at the top of the list. My kids roll their eyes every time I say “glucose-fructose” as it’s pure evil in our home.

When we eat Glucose-fructose, we never feel full or satisfied. It actually turns off our, “I’m full hormone” and turns on our, “I’m hungry hormone” so we are forever hungry and overeat! Overeating not only makes us feel uncomfortable but adds to inflammation in our body. Inflammation is the cause of most diseases including cancer, arthritis and heart disease. There are also a host of other additives in your bbq sauce. They can disrupt your nervous system and hormones and ruin a good night’s sleep.
Now back to our beloved bbq sauce. It’s a one bowl, 5 ingredient sauce and includes, apple butter, tamari, tahini, apple cider vinegar and fresh garlic. Mix and voilà homemade bbq sauce. Yes it’s that easy.
To infuse the flavours, cook the sauce for a few minutes, let it cool and store in a glass container in the fridge. Mix up the flavours too. Add different spices like; Smoky Paprika, , Cumin or Cinnamon. Try Doterra Tumeric Essential Oil or molasses for a different twist…Endless options.
Here’s the sticky sweet, fall off the bones bbq sauce recipe. Use on chicken, pork or long weekend ribs.
1 cup apple butter
1/3 cup tahini (or nut butter)
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
4-6 Tbsp tamari (soy sauce or coconut aminos)
2 fresh garlic cloves minced
1/4 cup molasses (optional)
Add all the ingredients to a small pot and bring to a soft boil. Remove from heat and cool. When cooled, store in an airtight glass container in the fridge. Enjoy.
